Is it me or has Boonex Unity taken a big nosedive in the past few days?

All I seem to see is fighting, arguing, badmouthing, thread hijacking and name calling. If the support wasn't bad enough, now I have to deal with being drawn into reading pages of people insulting each other. (yeah yeah - i know I didn't have to read it - but it's more entertaining than watching the TV).

The funniest thing is how a certain user seems to be railroading an idea through about beta testing - If boonex was my business I personally wouldn't suffer it, somehow it just doesn't seem appropriate, no matter how bad the current beta testing process may be. I am surprised that some of the Boonex team haven't taken offense.

It is also amusing that others, who have posted normal blog posts about thier experiences with Dolphin have thier posts deleted, and then the posts about having thier posts deleted, also deleted, whilst the previously mentioned, certain people just keep posting more and more worthless stuff that gets left up. Jeesh - even the spam gets left up. WTF is going on?

Welcome to my blog here at BoonexNerd.com. I will be adding links and stories that I found interesting and helpful. I've been a BoonexNerd.com lurker for several months and have decided to come out. I've worked with a few people here and have been given permission by the site owner to assist in the growth of this site.

It's great to be here and I'm excited to see what is possible with Dolphin especially with Dolphin 7 on the horizon. There seems to be a lot of activity with that one. You can see the threads by unoboonex and the hotwater they got into as members were getting upset. The delay was too much.

Your thoughts on Dolphin 7? Should they rush and release it or wait until it's perfect?

31 December, 196931 December, 1969 14 comments Uncategorized Uncategorized

I have to admit that I am impressed with Dolphin and even though there are many a bugs it is still good. I think its good they are coming out with a new version but it is taking so long. It was suppose to ship by now? 2 weeks is now 4 weeks or more I think. I have a project I wanted to launch by January but I don't think that will happen :( I still like the program but it would be nice if they can get Dolphin 7 out for others to try out.

I am torn between Dolphin 616 and Dolphin 7. What is everyone going to use? I don't think Dolphin 7 will be stable several more months. The new RC is full of bugs. Unless by some miracle the next RC is stable I wonder how good it would be to continue work with 616.

What's everyone doing?

UPDATE: RC2 is better but not 100%

I've been working on a mod to allow you to use html within user profiles. Whilst there are other mods out there that allow you to do this, they simply remove the 'sanitising' applied to ALL profile fields. There is an obvious security risk in doing this as it allows any user to post potentially destructive code.

The mod will allow users to choose who can edit the block - this allows the block to be visible only to admins if required - removing the issues associated with simply removing the sanitisation of ALL profile fields.

When the block is up and running I might also consider adding a filter so that HTML commands can be whiltelisted.

Ultimately the datatype allows each user to have a block displaying html within thier profile - this block is unique to each user. The upshot is that each user can have unique data displayed in their profile - each user could for example have information aggregated from another site - right there in thier profile - perhaps you want to show a users gaming stats in thier profile, or thier code stats from ohloh.

If you want users to have access to the block then they can post whatever they like.

What do people think of this mod?

Thoughts please.

Site Updates

I took a few minutes today to just update some of the blocks and also update the css files. I found that it worked out better when I kept the site colours within the same range. I took out some of the backgrounds and it seemed to simplify the look of the site a bit more. I guess this is where the concept of less is more may apply.

I've got a few more tutorials in the wings but not until I finish off some of my projects and work for this month. I am also waiting for Dolphin 6.1.5 and Dolphin 7. Exciting times for BoonEx and I can see the anticipation that people are showing.

My Twitter Project

Lately, I've gotten a lot of request for all things twittery. Personally, I have been interested in the whole Twitter thing for the past few months and have hacked a few twitter apps. All messy but they work, sort of. Anyway, I will most likely release some Free Twitter apps specifically designed for Dolphin. It will be free and will be initially given to those who are following me on Twitter. You need a Twitter account to try it out. You can then tweet your observations and comments to me.

I am really looking forward to Dolphin 7 and its promise of a more extensible approach to integrating mods. So far it looks really good.

I'll also take this opportunity to thank those kind souls who've sent me encouragement and kudos. You guys are great. It makes it all worthwhile.

I think it's lame when sites stoop so low to as to create fake online users that number in the thousands.

I won't name them here but I know of a few Dolphin sites that use the deceptive power of fake users. I think this is deceptive because it makes people think that your site is the place to be when it fact it's a ghost town. They will join with some expectation but then they soon discover they might be the only there along with a few lurkers here and there.

Here are some signs that the Dolphin site is using fake databases:

1. They have a forum but almost no activity. Even tho they may have a few thousand members.

2. The pictures don't match the site.

3. The pictures are cropped very similarly.

4. Their site traffic is nearly zero, see Alexa.com for this one.

5. If you check their stats block, no one is ever online.

So to all those lame Dolphin sites that use the fake database users, can you give me any reasons why you feel justified in doing so?

Compile Languages

The compile languages relates to what language file will be used for the Orca forums. The default is English and is indicated with a link labeled "en".

You will most likely need to recompile your language file for Orca if you change your language settings. You will see square bracket [L]. This means you need to recompile. To recompile, do the following:

  1. Login as admin and go to Plugins > Orca
  2. You will see the "en" link.

    compile

  3. Click on the "en" link and it will compile the language.
  4. Refresh your browser to see the changes.

To be fair there are scammers in every industry. From Joomla to PHPBB2 there will always be the malcontents. But hell, there sure is a lot of scammers at the Expertzzz forums. No one is trusting anyone there anymore. This is one of the few sites that I trust because the owners actually care what the hell is going on.

I found this site at http://www.filthyliar.com and it was hilarious. Put the scumbag scammer there that's what I say.

This has got to be the most heated threads I've seen there at the BoonEx Unity site.

It should be renamed mydatery vs. sammie. You can see the original thread from this link at http://www.boonex.com/unity/forums/#topic/Why-is-everyone-so-scared-to-run-their-own-RMS-.htm

The problem is that mydatery deleted all his posts.

It was an interesting he-said-you-said-she-said-I-said exchange. In the end, it looks like mydatery just had enough and sammie had enough of mydatery.

Can't we all just get along? After all, it's called a CommUNITY right?

For what it's worth, I love you all! mmmmmmmmmmmmmwah!

BoonexNerd.com site with an \

I received an e-mail today with a fellow asking questions and I noticed a lot of his questions could be answered either via the expertzzz.com, modmysite.com or even this site boonexnerd.com. As I was quickly typing out a reply, I had mispelled boonexnerd.com to boonexnerds.com with an "s". I didnt' think much of it, but then I thought, hey, lemme see if the domain is available.

I go to check and bam! Someone has unilaterally registered boonexnerds.com.
It is one letter short of boonexnerd.com.
And if I am correct, it looks like it was registered just today!

I dont' know who the person or company is but a quick check with whois revealed all kinds of info. It was registered by a company called MetaPredict. So does this mean good things will happen and that is why they are doing this? Who knows. But just remember, this is the real boonexnerd.com site! lol

I posted some info at my Unity Blog. Please chime in there and show me some lovin'...this kinda discouraged me :(

So just as a note to everyone, it's boonexnerd.com NOT boonexnerds.com.

Aside from a few hours of coding today, this was by far the most excitement I got today.

Yes, that's right I am Anonymous. I want to keep it that way. I am not a troll. I am not a meanie and I will not accuse you of anything without proof. I choose to remain anonymous for my own reasons.

The expertzzz site has turned in a sham. It is so hard to trust anyone there. There are people calling other people scammers and liars. There are threads that would make a lawyer salivate. There are "expertzzz" who are not. In short, I've left that place and no longer will participate there.

The BoonEx site is better but there are no moderators. There are posts that should be monitored or deleted and the answers forums gets no attention. The forum is good so I go there once in a while.

Tell me if I'm imagining things but it seems to me BoonEx doesn't really care too much about supporting their product. They sell it then leave it. They don't even have a manual or a way to help people get the most out of product.

I just like to say this site rocks! Many have found what they are looking for or help in a relatively down to earth atmosphere here at the Nerd! This site is highly respected and organized. A pleasure to visit.

I also wanted to add that James has done an excellent job and continues to be an asset to the Dolphin community. He is one of the better Moderators at boonex unity, and every time I have written to him I always recieve a prompt and curtious reply.

I do like this site, and it could really be even bigger than what it is. If you ever want a little input into how to increase a number of things...optimization, google search and ranks, and a few of the minor glitches I see here...forum feeds not working etc(no biggy with them).

As you know I have a very small dolphin related site. Recent health issues have set me back, but it was growing with a tiny user base and continues to rank more than most in google with little activity.

You could literally blow me and any similar site away with one little puff if you want and know what you are doing. I could possibly help you out or give you a few tips on how to go about this if you ever want to hear about them drop me a line to my email some time my man.

Laters and Continued Success!

I think it's obvious that users want to be customize their site otherwise sites like this and others will have nothing to do. How about adding a PHP or Javascript section to the forums? I think it would be a good idea because I am seeing members wanting to accomplish complex functions that dolphin does not do out of the box.

You need first to add a new PHP Block,

I have used @newdreamers - How_to_enable_PHP_block_in_the_Page_Builder to do this here.

You can also past PHP-code bellow to your DB if you use jtadeo's - How_to_Add_PHP_in_a_BLOCK

1: Builders/Pages Builder -> Homepage

Add a new PHP block in the Page Builder

Caption Lang Key: _Quotes
Visible for:  Guest  Member
PHP-code:
$arr = db_arr("SELECT `Text`, `Author` FROM DailyQuotes ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1");

 echo "
<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=0>
<tr><td><i>{$arr['Text']}</i></td></tr>
<tr><td><b>{$arr['Author']}</b></td></tr>
</table>
";

SAVE

==========

2: Settings/Languagees Setting -> Add a new language key

New language key name: _Quotes
Category: Page titles
String texts for available languages: Daily Quotes

SAVE

Now you can take a look at your site.

Adding any type of JavaScript based code via TinyMCE is problematic.

What you need to do is to make a blog post entry as you normally would but then go via the backend using phpMyAdmin to update the entry. You would need to manually add your Google Adsense code.

Here's an example:

Instructions
On the assumption you've made your blog post. You need to find the entry in your database. You will need to find your entry in the "BlogPosts" table.

When you find it, just paste your Google AdSense code where you want it to appear.

Remember, you may need to wait a few minutes until the ad shows up.

And voila! It's done.

Here's Another Way to Add Google Adsense to a Blog
You can add JavaScript in the page_49.html template. The file is located in the templates/tmpl_uni?

You will see this code:
__include _header.html__
    <div class="clear_both"></div>
        __page_main_code__
    <div class="clear_both"></div>
__include _footer.html__

You can add your ad like this:

__include _header.html__
        __page_main_code__
            <div class="clear_both"></div>
<script type="text/javascript"><!--
google_ad_client = "pub-0915650683949696";
//336x280, created 1/7/08
google_ad_slot = "8318103481";
google_ad_width = 336;
google_ad_height = 280;
//--></script>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script>
    <div class="clear_both"></div>
__include _footer.html__

The above example will put an add at the bottom of your blog page.

Please try it out and let me know how it works.

It was a great way to add some work over the weekend when BoonEx released Dolphin 7 RC last week or so.

Well, after installing beta after beta we finally got RC. I am sure there will be more to come. But it sure is looking good for the New Year :D

This version of Dolphin is built differently but as it appears it will be easier to update in the long run. I think what I like about it so far is the modules and extensions area. Borrowing from other OS apps, I hope it will make the task of modding easier.

I've read in the forums what people don't like about Dolphin 7 RC1, but how about talking about what you did like?

Any thoughts on this?

Hi all, Boonex users!:)

Well first of all, im not a web developer, im more of an part time entrepreneur, its been about 4 to 5 months i wanted to create an online community website, and hope to make extra money with it; actually i m glad that i ve found boonex even though it is not that free, but the cost is pretty much in my budget, and worth the job you get for what you paid for.

Second, during that 4 to 5 months period, i came along trying to use other CMS, such as Joomla, well i tought at that time that Joomla was heaven since they advertise how you can use Joomla without any programming knowledge (i learnt some stuff along as well...). That was ok, for a while, but the learning curve was ridiculously enormous for me. i started spending money on templates and extensions and stuffs, but what annoyed me was that some template wouldnt work with the latest joomla upgrade or some extension (paid one) wouldnt work with other extension i needed to make a community website; plus some extension took forever to come out as a stable version and to integrate with basic components or module.it was very annoying, so i was able to get some refund about 190 bucks worth :). so frankly joomla deceived me sorry to say that, i dont know if i should compare joomla to boonex in the first place...

So so far i like boonex, i have for now only paid for the dolphin adfree license for one year.

I am still looking around, here at james tadeo website for tutorials and how to's; i like this idea that if we as boonex community help each other, it will put more confidence for us to deliver a great product for our community... therefore adding value to our project and toward our customers (for example and this my case).

I have an account on Unity also; but it seems that spammers go around, i received several emails already from them in one weeks, that is something i dont want to see in my website.

Well thats about it for now for this post. i will have new post for questions and problems i need to get solved.

thank you for coming by!

I have been searching for a site that gives tips about how customise my dolphin site...i find that many members at boonex are not friendly and put down other members...i will ask a question and get some smart ass reply...i don't get that from this forum and it looks to me this is the only place where you can find solid tutorials and the dolphin manual...weird that boonex does not have a manual for their own program...

CSS Styles Editor

CSS Styles Editor allows you to select and edit the CSS file. In order to save the update, you need to make sure the proper chmod permissions are set on the css files and folder.

You can modify the your CSS Files by doing the following:

  1. 1. Login as admin and go to Settings > CSS Styles Editor
  2. 2. You will see a pulldown menu with the label Select CSS file you want edit.
  3. 3. Click and choose the CSS file you would like to edit.
  4. 4. Just below the pulldown menu an edit box will appear.
  5. 5. When you've finished your edits, click the Save button to save your edits.

If you do not have the correct permissions for your CSS Styles Editor, you will get the following message:

What do you guys think?

A lot of the issues I see with support are really people asking for custom mods.

Analysis and Recommendations

  • TOTAL_HTML - Congratulations, the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization. Y
  • TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 64 which by their number will dominate web page delay. Consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Above 20 objects per page the overhead from dealing with the actual objects (description time and wait time) accounts for more than 80% of whole page latency. See Figure II-3: Relative distribution of latency components showing that object overhead dominates web page latency in Website Optimization Secrets for more details on how object overhead dominates web page latency. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Using CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques can reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames or a CDN to reduce object overhead.
  • TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 44 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Recommend combining, replacing, and optimizing your graphics. Replace graphic rollover menus with CSS rollover menus to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Use CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques to reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames to reduce object overhead.
  • TOTAL_CSS - Warning! The total number of external CSS files on this page is 9 , consider reducing this to one or two external files. Combine, refine, and optimize your external CSS files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed CSS for high-traffic pages) on your pages. You can optimize CSS files using shorthand properties, grouping, and then minify and GZIP compress them to reduce their footprint. Remember to place CSS files in the HEAD and JavaScript files at the end of the BODY to enable progressive display.
  • TOTAL_MULTIM - Congratulations, the total number of external multimedia files on this page is 1 .
  • TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 333725 bytes, which will load in 79.31 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 100K to achieve sub 20 second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback. Consider optimizing your site with Website Optimization Secrets, Speed Up Your Site or contacting us about our optimization services.
  • TOTAL_SCRIPT - Warning! The total number of external script files on this page is 9 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refactor, and minify to optimize your JavaScript files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages. Consider suturing JavaScript files together at the server to minimize HTTP requests. Placing external JavaScript files at the bottom of your BODY, and CSS files in the HEAD enables progressive display in XHTML web pages.
  • HTML_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this HTML file is 33361 bytes, which less than 50K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your HTML to display content in under 10 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
  • IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 106376 bytes, which is over 100K. Consider switch graphic formats to achive smaller file sizes (from JPEG to PNG for example). Finally, substitute CSS techniques for graphics techniques to create colored borders, backgrounds, and spacing.
  • SCRIPT_SIZE - Warning! The total size of external your scripts is 132669 bytes, which is over 20K. Consider optimizing your JavaScript for size, combining them, and using HTTP compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents. You can substitute CSS menus for JavaScript-based menus to minimize or even eliminate the use of JavaScript.
  • CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 56889 bytes, which is over 20K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate. By using labeled container cells and descendant selectors you can target chunks of HTML content efficiently without the need to embed extra claases and styles.
  • MULTIM_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your external multimedia files is 4430 bytes, which is less than 10K.

here is a speed test for my website!! :o

i guess i cant wait to try it on a dedicated server! is it really "faster" using a dedicated server?

thank you!

Permalinks

A permalink is a search engine friendly version of the links that are generated on your site. Instead of using a query string, permalinks will display relevant named pages.

What Does a Query string look like?

A query string is a set of name/value pairs that gets passed to a Web page. For example, this is a query string:
http://www.boonexnerd.net/dolphin/orca/?action=goto&cat_id=12

Can you see the ?,& and = signs? Those are what make up the name/value pairs. Now compare that with a permalink and you will see that permalinks is easier to understand.

Here's what a permalink looks like:

http://mywebnerd.com/mytestsite/test

In terms of search engine friendliness, the permalink has more relevancy and can be visually identified much easier than a query string.

You can work with the predefined values by doing the following:

  1. Login as admin and go to Settings > Permalinks
  2. You will see a list of settings such as:
    • Enable friendly profile permalinks
    • Enable friendly articles permalinks
    • Enable friendly news permalinks
    • Enable friendly blogs permalinks
    • Enable friendly events permalinks
    • Enable friendly classifieds permalinks
    • Enable friendly gallery photos permalinks
    • Enable friendly gallery music permalinks
    • Enable friendly gallery videos permalinks
    • Enable friendly groups permalinks

Each setting is activated by selecting the checkbox. When you select the checkbox a check mark will appear. This means it will be active. The permalink function in Dolphin requires that you have the proper .htaccess configured. The default install of Dolphin has it built-in. This feature may not work with all Web hosting accounts. It will require that you turn off permalinks.

Regarding Mail Queue and E-mail Not Sending Out

When you create a queue, you need to make sure you have a member(s). Being and admin is not counted as being a member.

It should also say "1 emails was successfully added to queue." There should be at least 1 e-mail in the queue. For example, this one has 7 e-mails in the queue:

e-mail queue

You should also check your Quick Stats. You can find that info in your admin panel as well as the main page usually. In the admin panel it should have at least 1 Member. If it is "0" then you need a member to join up. Otherwise, the job will not run as there is nothing to do. If you have no members it will say:

"0 emails was successfully added to queue".

  2. The Feedback page will load.

Hi, does anybody know how to add a page?  I got it added in the Navigation menu and in the php programming files, but when I go to page builder and create a new page with that name, that is not the content that shows up when I look at the website and click on that navigation bar.  If anybody can help with this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Dolphin 7 Alpha Notes and Observations (in progress)

BoonEx has released it's Alpha version of Dolphin 7 and it was just as they had said it would be. There were more classes and as it appears a better way to make modules and extensions for Dolphin. Here's the download for Dolphin 7 alpha as of June 12, 2009.

These are two key items that from a programmer's point of view that will help make Dolphin more popular and extensible. Namely, the ability to standardize the install of modules and keeping all the classes in smaller and tighter bundles. In essence Dolphin 7 has the beginnings of a common framework. Organizationally, it looks much better. Below are some other observations:

Dolphin has a several different types of users. Some are hobbyist, designers, developers, programmers, small business and media companies. Yes, the market range is that vast and the expertise definitely varies from group to group.

For the hobbyist, alpha is not the way to go as it is too raw to be of any use. I say stick to 6.1.4/6 version of Dolphin. If you can't find a downloadable version, check outdialme.com. The site keeps track of the versions of Dolphin. I think he has a few downloads going back to 5.x.

For designers, developers and monkey-coders this alpha version of Dolphin 7 is a tease. It gives you just enough to get it working but not much more as it really is an intro to the admin side of things. The front end is incomplete and raw. But fear not, there is a public SVN that has been made availble. However, the SVN as of June 20, 2009 is not accessible. So what does this mean? It means you will need to download the .zip file at the bottom of the page. Here's the location of the Dolphin 7 SVN. To be of any real use, it needs to be set up on an SVN server or the current install needs to allow developers to connect via an SVN client. If anyone is interested in a basic SVN tutorial, I will post it if I can get enough interest.

For programmers, well it's a big munch. You will notice that compared to the class listing for Dolphin 616, Dolphin 7's class listing is much more extensive. You can see the class and functions listing for Dolphin 6.1.6 here and the class and functions listing for Dolphin 7 alpha here. I used phpdocumenter to list the various classes and functions straight from the file. I will be notating it as I find more info. It's the same as in D6 except there's much more to work with. What's great about classes that programmers can extend the class to customize it to their needs. However at this time, there is no documentation for any of the classes and functions. I am so hoping that will change with Poseidon.

Dolphin 7 alpha - list of functions and classes

Above: Dolphin 7 Alpha - List of classes and functions. There are a lot of classes and some new functions.
Dolphin 6.1.6 list of functions and classes is available here.

For media companies, don't even touch this unless you have the money for research, development and you have your own team of coders. This is as raw as they come and it would not be a good idea to use any type of alpha to do anything. Good for testing tho and for poking around. Stick to D6 and it's various flavours. I've had a lot of success with Dolphin 6.1.4.

Dolphin 7 packs more functions than previous versions and that's good news for the hobbyist, designer or developer who just can't do without the social net toys. For modders and programmers, Dolphin 7 opens up a way to standardize how they can deliver their mods or apps whether free or pay. With the new modules standard, I trust it Dolphin will follow the path of Joomla and WordPress with regards to how others can add to the current set of functions.

In conclusion, I think the Dolphin 7 alpha is acceptable to look at as a preview (as per BoonEx's notes) in the admin section and also how the code was structured. It's also a way for programmers to take the module/extension paradigm for a quick spin. There is an example file within the modules folder one can take a look at. I've had a chance to roll my own and it was pretty easy. I just took the example file and poked around until I got a simple mod to work. You know, the standard "Hello World" test. It may seem uneventful, but the tiny step will mean great things for both free and fee-based mods.

...sip...

I've been reading from the unity forums and others about how some people are spendings hours and hours trying to install dolphin. What I don't get is where do they find all this time? I figure if you spent the last 18 hours on it then it clearly means you don't have a clue on what you're doing. Why not spend $50 to get it professionally installed. I'm talking about people like this guy http://www.boonex.com/unity/answers/entry/Installation_annoyances

Look how much time he took to try to get it to work. He says, "I have spent 17 hours and 6 technicians on this and it just will not work. the RAY program will NOT install, it just comes to a finish page when installed in a sub-directory instead of off the root."

I mean what the hell, is your time worth so very little?

So before you install, do some checking on the technical requirements for dolphin. And if you spend more than a few hours then start bitching about how dolphin sucks, why not spend $50 bucks and save yourself the headache.

Payment Settings

Payment Settings allows you to choose the currency and manage payment providers. Along with the membership levels, you can complement the Payment settings by using a payment service like PayPal to charge for site memberships.

How to Set up PayPal Checkout Page

You can use PayPal for membership or subscriptions sales for Boonex Dolphin. Follow these step-by-step instructions and let me know how it turns for you. Please add your comments in the original thread.

Login to Admin

  1. Go to Settings > Membership Levels
  2. Under Membership settings, uncheck "Site is running in free mode". In other words, make sure there is no checkmark in the box. By doing this, it will activate the My Membership payment page. You can then go to your account page and you will see the checkout button. If you click it, it will take you to PayPal.

SET UP YOUR PAYMENT PROVIDER - PAYPAL

You then need to set it up your PayPal ID in Settings > Payment Settings

In the PayPal tab set the following values:

  • Active [checkbox yes]
  • Mode Live
  • Debug (You can safely ignore this for now)
  • Supports recurring [This defaults to yes]
  • Business [put your pp email there]
  • Process type [IPN is the most common]
  • Connection type [HTTP unless you have HTTPS]
  • Identity token [ignore]
  • Don't prompt customer to include a note [I checkmark this]
  • SandBox Business [If you are running a PayPal sandbox, then enter your sandbox biz name there]

To get a more details, click the "Payment provider setup instructions" link located just to the left of the Save button.

All the other stuff is optional. Now click the save button. Then click the validate saved configuration. On success, you will get a "Configuration valid" message.

Congrats, you've now set up PayPal with your site. Now you need to add your memberships.

ADD A MEMBERSHIP TYPE SO YOUR MEMBERS CAN BUY A SUBSCRIPTION

In order to make money from you site, you need to take out of "free mode". Taking it out of free mode will enable the membership and payment system to allow the collection of money via a gateway such as PayPal.

Here's how you take it out of free mode:

  1. Login to admin.
  2. Go to Settings > Membership Levels
  3. Focus on the Membership settings and uncheck the "Site is running in free mode" check box.

You then need to add a membership type.

In the default install there are 3 that are currently available, they are:

  • Non-member
  • Standard
  • Promotion

For this tutorial, let's add a membership. We can call it anything we want, for example, let's add a membership type call "Member Level 4".

Here's how you add a new membership type:

  1. Focus on the Manage Membership Types panel.
  2. You will see "New Membership". In the text field, enter the name of your membership.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. Your new membership type will show up in the Membership Types list. As a default, its mode is [Inactive]. To activate the a custom membership type, click the [Inactive] link and it will toggle to [Active].

Add an Action to the Membership Type

Clicking on the membership type name will enable the Membership Actions panel. In this panel you can specify the allowed actions for the selected membership type.

  1. You add actions by selecting the action from the drop down list.
  2. Click the Add action button.
The added action will then show up in the actions list for the selected membership type.

Specify Limits to an Added Action

You can limit the quantity of actions by clicking on the Show link that appears to the very right of the action.

For example, here are actions that relate to "can add_delete classified":

  1. Number of allowed actions: [no limit]
  2. Number of actions is reset every: [no limit] hours
  3. This action is available since: [no limit] (This is date based)
  4. This action is available until: [no limit] (This is date based)

By specifying the limits, you have some control on what actions can occur in terms of quantity and duration.

Delete an Action

You can delete an action by clicking the Delete button located to the very right of the action. It actually does not delete the action but rather will remove it from the list.

Add a Price to a Membership Type

Clicking on the Pricing link will enable the Pricing panel. In this panel you can specify the Number of days and the price for the selected membership type. Here's how to do that:

  1. Add the number of days you want the membership type to be active by entering the number in the "Number of days (0 = life-time membership):" field.
  2. You can then assign a price to the field by placing the cost in the price field.
  3. Click the Add payment option.
  4. The Pricing panel will refresh to show you newly added payment option.

Note: It is important to note you must enable a payment provider so you can receive money. This is done by logging into the admin and going to Settings > Payment Settings > Manage payment providers panel.

HOW A MEMBER BUYS A SUBSCRIPTION

A member must be logged into to your site in order to buy a subscription. Once logged in, you can provide them with the following link:

http://www.yoursite.com/membership.php

It will take them to a page where they can buy a membership. This page will show their membership level and also the what memberships or subscriptions you've defined as memberships.

In terms of providing the link, you can create a tab using the navigation builder or once logged in that will take them to the membership.php page. You can also provide it as a sub link via the navigation builder. Using the drag and drop builder, you can do this quickly.

    • Add Widgets - This a listing of available widgets that can further enhance your site.
    • Base Settings - These settings relate to RMS or Ray Media Server.
    • Base Updates - This gives you information about your version install of Ray Base.

There are a few additional mods that can extend the Ray Widgets.
Free Widgets from Rayz
Banner Manager - http://www.expertzzz.com/Downloadz/view/2549
Banners Manager 2.0 - http://www.expertzzz.com/Downloadz/view/3751

To get the most interaction amongst members with Ray Suite widgets you can use an RMS or Ray Media Server. RMS is based on a modified version of Red5 Server. It allows the Ray widgets to interact with one another in real time. For example, RMS makes it possible to stream video chat and voice.

RMS requires technical expertise to set up and deploy. The instructions on how to set up your own RMS is found at:
http://www.boonex.com/trac/ray/wiki/RayTech
http://www.boonex.com/trac/ray/wiki/RayServerInstall

If you are not interested in doing your own install, there are several RMS Hosting companies available in list format at www.boonexnerd.com in the resources section.

Mass Mailer (In progress)

boonex dolphin admin tools mass mailer

Mass mailer allows you to send messages to your members. As a prerequisite, you need to ensure that you cron jobs are set.

The mass mailer works on a queue concept. If there is nothing in the queue then it can't send any mail out. So to send out mail we need to add a message in the queue. Once added, it gets picked up and sent. The queue is controlled by the cron job.

The BoonEx Dolphin Admin

The BoonEx Dolphin admin area allows you to control and edit information. In most cases, whatever you adjust in the admin portion of the site will be reflected on the live site and can be visually observed. For example, the navigation menu builder, when updated, will reflect the update on the live site.

A special part about the BoonEx Dolphin admin system is that it uses a drag and drop method when working with blocks. You can think of a block as a collection of functions that is encapsulated in a neat draggable container. Here's an example of a set of blocks:

boonex dolphin admin block example

The blocks when seen on the front end look like this:

boonex dolphin blocks on the front end

It's important to take note how the blocks with match up to the display. One of the best ways to get an idea of how it works is to try it for yourself.

The admin also uses the standard Web controls such as text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, pulldown menus and form buttons. These standard Web controls may also be included within special blocks giving additional admin control of the block and the functions associated with the selected block. Along with the drag and drop paradigm, the standard Web controls it give Dolphin a friendly and unique admin system. Here is an example of a block with Web controls:

boonex dolphin block example with web controls

The web controls pass parameters to the page and then to the database so the values can be saved. Blocks can help to specify the information you want to display. In the example above, the block is an RSS Feed that picks up the top forum posts.

If you have your main domain name pointing to the installation of dolphin in a sub folder like i did it should appear like this www.yourdomainname.com/subfolder/

So what if you want it to appear like this www.yourdomainname.com.

*try this at your own risk and be careful* always keep a backup copy.

1. Firstly when you open your htaccess file in public_html if you see a redirect already in place such as this remove it:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomainname.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomainname.com$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/yourdomainname\.com\/subfolder" [NC] [L]

2. Then add the following below in between the ----- and editing only the parts as instructed:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

# Do not change this line.

RewriteEngine on

# Change yourdomain.com to be your main domain.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?yourmaindomain.com$

# Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your main domain.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/subfolder/

# Don't change this line.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

# Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your main domain.

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /subfolder/$1

# Change yourdomain.com to be your main domain again.
# Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your main domain
# followed by / then the main file for your site, index.php, index.html, etc.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?yourmaindomain.com$
RewriteRule ^(/)?$ subfolder/index.php [L]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. open header.inc.php in /inc

find:

$site['url'] = "http://www.yourdomainname.com/subfolder";

change to:

$site['url'] = "http://www.yourdomainname.com/";

-----------------------------------------------------------------

do not change the $dir['root'] further down.

Also i had a slight hiccup with the link to the forum, so i opened navigation builder, found the link to forums opened it and added a / so it looks like this: /orca/ and that works looks odd sometimes but works.

FINISHED

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thankyou my expertzzz link is kosmic

I think dolphin is just crazy amazing but the problem is I am not a programmer. After looking at the different sites out there it looks to me that to do anything useful either have to be a programmer or have some code knowledge. Especially if you don't have a lot of money.

I need to know where I can get some quick tutorials on how to write php or whatever it is that dolphin does.

I want to know how to create a nice designer like in word press.

Where are the templates?

How to Apply the Licensing for Dolphin

Out of all three licenses, applying the Dolphin license is the easiest one to do. Remember that before you apply your license that you have installed the AdFree version.

Here's how to apply the BoonEx Dolphin license:

  1. Go to your admin at www.yourdolphinsite.com/admin/
  2. The login screen should appear.
  3. On successful login, you will be presented with the following screen:

    boonex dolphin license screen

  4. Where it says "Input License:" you will see a text box. Add you license number there and click the Register button.
  5. On click of the Register button, it will automatically take you to the main admin area. At this point, your Dolphin install is now registered. You may also need to refresh your browser so you can see the effects.
  6. You can choose to enter the license or you can click the Continue link.

Hi I am the official voice and ghost writer for BoonexNerd. I have known jtadeo for many years and have worked on various projects involving Web. BoonexNerd.com came out of a need to get quick and simple tutorials for newbies and experienced developers.

In the next few weeks it is my goal to repost the information from the original site to this new site install. The old site ran on the 603 database and has been archived.

If there are parts to the site that you need please post it on the forum and I will do my best to get that information out to you. There will be some tutorials that no longer apply and those might be kept just for historical purposes.

I was having some lunch at the coffee shop just planning out some work when I got the idea to allow the automatic addition of AdBrite links to my blog entries. Not that I've done a whole lot of blogging lately, but I challenged myself to try to do a quickie solution. Well nothing is every quick and this little bit of script took about an hour, more than I had planned to take on account that I am on a schedule working on some Dolphin Web sites.

Anyway, this is a test blog entry and I hope it works.

If it does then something should show up at the bottom...

Well,  I would like to start this topic in BoonexNerd.com because this place is probably the most thorough help that one can get without going through Google for like 5 hours and still finding nothing except discouraging hope that you can get Ray widgets to work!

If ANYONE has ANY help, tips or advise on how to correct or troubleshoot the following two things, please post them here!!!!  If boonex has less time in support forums, maybe they can have more time to fix the issues.

NEEDED:  Information on the following on Ray Integration/Installation into Boonex's Dolphin:

"undefined" errors

Continuous Loading

Thanks,  RideHard
